By: Trevor Kugler
Of the millions of pieces of fishing gear available to anglers, what's the most convenient one? This is obviously hard to narrow down, but in this article, I'm going to attempt to do just that. The biggest factor to which piece of fishing gear is the most convenient is the type of fishing that you engage in most often. Do you fish from a boat for Bass, Walleye, or Offshore? Or do you fish from the bank in rivers, streams, lakes, or even the ocean?
There are literally millions of different contraptions that will supposedly make your fishing experience more convenient, but for the purposes of this article I'm going to attempt to narrow it down to one. No matter what type of fishing you engage in most often, there are certain things that need to be done all the time. For example, snipping your fishing line happens a lot, no matter what type of fishing is your favorite. And how do most of us accomplish this task? Yep. By biting the line with our teeth. But is this the way we should be cutting our fishing line? Nope we should cut the line somehow. But who has time to find a knife every time our fishing line needs snipped?
The answer to this particular problem, and my choice as the most convenient piece of fishing gear is called a retractor. A retractor is simply a small device (usually the diameter of a quarter) that clips onto your fishing vest, pocket, or shirt and allows you to attach any lightweight piece of fishing gear to it. Whatever you attach to your retractor then hangs below the retractor, waiting to be used. When you need the equipment, you use it and then simply release it. The retractor zips (or retracts) it right back in. In our example about snipping fishing line, a pair of nail clippers is attached to a retractor and the problem is solved. Then anytime your line needs to be snipped, simply grab the nail clippers, snip the line, and release them. The retractor does the rest.
For my money, the retractor is the most convenient piece of fishing gear. Small retractors only cost a couple of dollars, and the amount of time they save is amazing. Whether nail clippers, hemostats, or whatever lightweight piece of gear you choose is attached, the bottom line is that you'll love them. I know I couldn't even imagine fishing without a couple of retractors attached to my fishing vest. For me, retractors are as integral to my fishing trips as my fishing rod is.
